Homestyle Garlic Beef and Tender Cabbage Skillet Stir-Fry

Description

Homestyle Garlic Beef and Tender Cabbage Skillet Stir-Fry is a quick, flavourful, and satisfying one-pan meal that combines tender slices of beef with crisp yet tender cabbage in a savoury garlic-infused sauce. This comforting dish is inspired by classic home-style stir-fries that emphasise simple ingredients and bold flavours. The beef is marinated to enhance tenderness, while the cabbage absorbs the rich garlic and soy-based sauce, creating a delicious balance of textures and taste. Perfect for busy weeknights, this recipe comes together in under 30 minutes and pairs beautifully with steamed rice, noodles, or cauliflower rice for a lower-carb option.

Ingredients

For the Beef

  • 300 g beef, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • ½ tsp black pepper

For the Stir-Fry

  • 3 cups cabbage, chopped
  • 1 medium carrot, julienned
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp sesame oil

For the Sauce

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp water
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the sliced beef with soy sauce, cornflour, and black pepper. Let marinate for 10–15 minutes.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, brown sugar, water, and red pepper flakes. Set aside.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  4. Add the beef and stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, add onion and carrot. Cook for 2 minutes until slightly softened.
  6. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  7. Add chopped cabbage and stir-fry for 4–5 minutes until tender-crisp.
  8. Return the cooked beef to the skillet.
  9. Pour the prepared sauce over the mixture and toss until everything is evenly coated.
  10. Drizzle with sesame oil and cook for another 1–2 minutes.
  11. Remove from heat and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Green cabbage or Napa cabbage both work well.
  • Thinly slicing the beef helps it cook quickly and remain tender.
  • Fresh garlic provides the best flavour.
  • Adjust spice levels by increasing or omitting the red pepper flakes.

Tips

  • Freeze the beef for 20 minutes before slicing for thinner cuts.
  • Cook over high heat to achieve the best stir-fry texture.
  • Avoid overcooking the cabbage to preserve its slight crunch.
  • Prepare all ingredients before cooking since stir-frying moves quickly.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds or green onions for extra flavour.
